Eye construction types
Collectors may encounter inset glass eyes, tack eyes, painted eyes, decal eyes, molded eyes, and later replacement eyes. Photograph from the side and slightly above to show the socket, rim, and attachment.
What glass eyes cannot prove
Glass eyes do not automatically establish a precise date, famous maker, or high value. They were used by multiple manufacturers and can be replaced or added during restoration.
Supporting evidence
Combine eye style with exact body shape, length, material, line tie, lip, hook hardware, stamps, and box. Look for disturbed paint around the eye socket or mismatched aging.
Photographing eyes
Use diffuse light to avoid glare. Capture both eyes because replacement or damage may affect one side only. Include a close view and a full-body view so the eye remains in context.
